About Me

Me at work planting our experiment
Hi, my name is Susanna. I am a senior studying Environmental Science and Studio Art at Loyola University Chicago. In addition, I am a student worker at Loyola in Urban Agriculture. I help take care of a 3,100 square foot greenhouse, two aquaponics systems, and three outdoor garden sites. I love growing food and being a part of making the food system more sustainable. This summer I am, in addition to gardening, taking on a soil research internship with Dr. Bala Chaudhary on a green roof on campus. I am excited to learn many new research skills and be apart of the ongoing process of understanding soil better. This blog will document my journey through this internship and exploration of soil.

When I'm not at work (which is really not work most of the time), I enjoy more gardening, riding my bike, playing guitar, drawing and painting, and exploring the Chicagoland area. I love to be outdoors and in nature. I hope to make being apart of nature a part of my job one day. I'm not sure quite yet whether that means continuing work in agriculture or research. However, I am sure that I want to dedicate my life to understanding and making the Earth better for all of its inhabitants. One day, I want to have my own land where I can grow all the food I need to eat. I can't wait!
